A Creative act

A creative act—unlike the creative process—is a brief and concise decision, often intuitive and unfiltered by the mind. It is an essential element in an artist’s toolkit, functioning both as part of the process and as a creation in and of itself. It encompasses rituals and routines, solutions to problems, and the satisfaction derived from simple actions, such as selecting an aesthetically pleasing mug to drink from. It’s the spontaneous ideas that seem to come from nowhere.

Madison’s work examines her surroundings and their connection to her existence. She often emphasizes the importance of documenting what she observes. Growing up immersed in nature, she developed a deep interest in how we perceive natural spaces—a fascination that has evolved since her move to Barcelona. Currently, her focus lies on the ethereal sensations found in crowded streets and the subtle ways nature asserts itself, pushing through cracks in the pavement and creating distorted perspectives.

For this piece, I was drawn to those concepts and how they naturally flow to artists. My focus was on a single creativeact and the way an artist experiences and interprets such acts. Specifically, I explored the process of completing apainting, documenting the final touches, and reflecting on the experience of finishing it. Inspired by Rick Rubin's book The Creative Act, the artist completed one of her pieces with a sensory "send-off" for this mini-doc, before returning to the starting point: observing and waiting for the next painting to take shape in her mind's eye.
